How to Properly Market Your Kindle eBook

Marketing your Kindle eBook can seem like a daunting task, especially if you’ve never dabbled in the world of self publishing and marketing before. As always, you can count on The Ghost Publishing to simplify the process, and offer clarity and peace of mind to you, the author of that fantastic novel you’ve been excited to show the world. Today I’m going to tell you how to properly market your Kindle eBook to make it successful.

Okay, so you’re sitting in front of your keyboard with a freshly pressed masterpiece. Many authors, especially fledgling authors, struggle with understanding how they can get their eBook from their hands to the rest of the world.

1. First of all, it’s important to have a clear idea of who your target market is. This simply means that you need to have an understanding of who your book is geared towards. What sorts of readers have a desire to read what you’ve written? The first mistake many authors make is sending their book out to everyone that they can cram into an email contact list, or blasting all of their Facebook friends with the announcement of their book’s release.

Many of your contacts may not be interested in reading books in your genre, and some may not like to read at all! While we all know they’re missing out on fantastical worlds full of magic, and mayhem, it’s important to respect their right to remain exempt from content that they don’t wish to see show up in their feed.

The simple solution to this is to begin with the reader in mind. In fact, this should be the very first step you take before you even write “It was a dark and stormy night,” in chapter one of your book. Not only does this eliminate a marketing fiasco after the book is written, but it also helps you gear the content of the book toward the people you want to read it. Never begin writing without first identifying who you’re writing for.

2. Next, you should create your eBook cover. I know, you’re yelling at me through your screen about how you can’t even draw stick figures. That’s okay! There are plenty of people who draw really good stick figures. The point I’m trying to make is that in our digitally connected age, it’s easy to reach out to talented artists and ask them to create your book cover for you. In fact, there are services that are dedicated to helping you do just that!

www.Fiverr.com allows you to ask an artist to create a book cover for you for only $5! Talk about a bargain. Buyer beware, however, as sites like this leave you playing Russian roulette. Sometimes, you may spend $5 and receive a less-than-fantastic book cover that will leave you wishing you chose a different artist. I can confidently say though, that many of the book covers are exceptional for the price. “You should never judge a book by its cover,” they say. Well, when your readers are scrolling through their kindle with their morning coffee, I can assure you that that’s exactly what they’re doing.

Humans are visually stimulated beings.  We want something that’s going to grab our attention, and throw in our face all the reasons why we should be reading it. I simply can not state enough the importance of having a strong book cover. If you’re an artistic person, and have experience with Photoshop, or another art program, I recommend reading my blog post on the Rule of Thirds, which is a method used by best sellers to draw a potential reader’s attention by strategically placing cover elements.

3. The third thing you want to do to properly market your Kindle eBook is placing the image of your book cover on your blog, social media, and wherever else you have a presence online. Accompanying the book cover should be a small snippet that builds anticipation for your book’s upcoming release. One reason many authors fail to generate hype for their eBook is that they begin this process after the book is written, and ready for release.

Ideally, you want to begin showboating your story long before it’s finished. That’s right, when you begin writing your book you should be marketing it. This also serves as a tool for accountability, to prevent you from procrastinating on those days where you really don’t feel like writing. My only advice is to make sure that it’s something you really want to write, otherwise you’ll have a lot of hype built up for a book that will never see the light of day.

4. Last, but certainly not least, utilize Mailchimp, or some other email campaign tool to bring your book to the attention of those who you think may be interested. Email campaigns are wonderful, as they allow you to periodically remind readers that your book is inching closer to release.

If you’re really not sure how to use email campaigns, or simply don’t have the time of day to set them up and manage them, The Ghost Publishing provides these services as a part of our marketing package! Let us help your eBook gain exposure. The best part of all is that we’ll manage the entire process, so you’ll still have time to drool over your best seller!
